Date: April 14, 2007
Time: 1 to 2 p.m.
We will be taking one big photo of the entire group at 1:45 p.m. sharp! So, please do not miss this once in a lifetime opportunity to be a part of the Asheville StepItUp2007 Rally!
Location: City/County Plaza (in front of the City of Asheville Building) in Downtown Asheville, NC.
Purpose: On this one spring day, there will be hundreds and hundreds of rallies all across the country. There will be gatherings in every state, and in many of America's most iconic places: on the levees in New Orleans, on top of the melting glaciers on Mt. Rainier, even underwater on the endangered coral reefs off Key West.
Every group will be saying the same thing: "Step it up, Congress! Cut Carbon 80% by 2050." As people gather, we'll take pictures of the protest and link them together electronically via the web to the other photos and rallies. Before the weekend is out, StepItUp2007 will be the largest protest the country has ever seen, not in numbers but in extent. From every corner of the nation we'll start to shake things up.
Confirmed speakers for our rally in Asheville:
- Asheville City Mayor Terry Bellamy
- Warren Wilson College President Sandy Pfeiffer
- Richard Fireman, Western Region Director of the NC Interfaith Power & Light (a program of the NC Council of Churches)
- NC State Treasurer Richard Moore
- John Huie, PhD., Director of the Environmental Leadership Center of Warren Wilson College will emcee the event.
Invitations have been extended to Senator Elizabeth Dole and Congressman Heath Shuler.
This will be a one-hour rally. We will be taking one big photo of the entire group at 1:45 p.m. sharp! So, please do not miss this once in a lifetime opportunity!
